Costume Sketches: My Little Pony, Part 1

I have a lot of ideas for costumes that I would like to do in the relatively near future.  So far the one that has taken hold is to do a My Little Pony costume.  I’m not sure which one.  I’m not sure how many right now, as this would be super fun with a group of friends.  But I am pretty certain that I will make at least one of these for myself this year.

Over the last week, I plugged in my little Bamboo tablet and began sketching out some ideas.  I’ve come up with a set of Victorian, somewhat steampunk designs that I think would look great together.  This post will contain my first three sketches because I still have one left to finish, and separating them into three and three seems like a better plan than five and one.  I’ll share them with you here (though some of you may have seen a few as I was drawing them and posting to Facebook and Twitter), with hopes for feedback.  Which one of these do you like the most?  Which one(s) should I make??  Please let me know if you have suggestions or opinions!

RarityCostumeConcept

Rarity is such a fashionista that I felt her look should involve a sophisticated ballgown.  The hi-lo bottom skirt will have a bustle on the back, and it will definitely have a ruffle.  Above the corset is a some purple lace leading up to a choker collar.  Accessories would include fingerless gloves, a boa, a parasol, and some fancy hat, possibly wide-brimmed, or small and involving lace and a feather.  I’d have to make a unicorn horn and pony ears out of some white craft foam (using some tricks I learned when making my foam armor way back in the day).  Purple wig and tail, and lots of light blue accents, including some strappy blue heels.

ApplejackCostumeConcept

It was pretty obvious that Applejack’s costume theme would make her into a cowgirl.  As such she needs a small dressed up cowgirl hat, and certainly some cowgirl boots.  Blonde wig & tail, and the base of the costume will be in orange, as will the ears.  For fun, I thought I might do the cups of the corset as apples.  The pencil skirt will have a ruffle and some appliques of her cutie mark, and a pickup bustle on the back.

PinkiePie

Pinkie Pie’s look is meant to be fun and almost that of a gentleman.  Her underbust halter style corset is to appear pinstriped, and have tails in the back like a suit jacket.  Underneath it, is a pink shirt resembling a button down.  The part I am not happy with here is the black skirt.  Part of me things this should be black shorts?  Or maybe I should skip the black completely?  I do like the long sheer skirt that only hangs down the back of the black skirt.  If I keep the black in the ensemble, I’d love to have black saddle shoe style boots at the bottom.  I don’t have a good place on this costume to place her cutie mark, so I’ve attached some helium balloons to a cane prop that would be carried.  In the other arm she’s definitely have to have a Gummy (the gator) prop – bonus if I could attach him to her tail somehow!  Pinkie would wear a fedora or bowler hat, and it’s possible that Gummy would have one too.  The necktie and lacing on the corset are to match Gummy’s colors, though I could also match them to one of the blue balloons.

Rest of the ponies will be coming soon!  Which is your favorite?  I have a hard time choosing, I like them all for different reasons.

The corset with tails in #3 is a stroke of genius, as are apple corset cups in #2. I’m ready for you to open a custom costume shop.

Haha, thanks. I’m not quite ready to give up my day job yet … but it is tempting! 😉

I like them all, but I’m voting for apple jack! I like the gold/red combination, and the outfit on the whole seems the most different form all your other costumes.

Thanks for the feedback! I hadn’t thought about that, but yeah some of the pieces are kinda similar to my steampunk coat … good call!

I like the cowgirl pony a lot. Fun and ironic that a horse is also a cowgirl. And I can send you a rodeo cowgirl barrel racing belt buckle, which oddly I have a few of. And real Cowgirl leather boots come in bright colors like yellow now. The pink pony is very good too. And I recommend replacing the black shorts-skirt with the green and integrating the alligator into that using embrodery or silk screen.

Thanks for the feedback! I wondered about green with the shorts/skirt for Pinkie. I’d have to do some research on embroidery or silk screen, but it could be fun!
