Disco Details

Today I thought I would do a short post on the details I’ve been working into the Disco Mario Party cosplay group.

1.  Bling

My husband suggested that we needed some bling for Mario and Luigi (as if those two won’t be shiny enough already …).  Amazon had the perfect thing(s): a red growth mushroom pendant to match Mario and a green 1Up mushroom to match Luigi.  They were a little pricier than I was interested in spending ($25 each), but as a group we decided they were too perfect NOT to get.

2.  Peach’s Crown

To give my own costume a little pick-me-up, I want to light up my crown.  Which I am still in the process of making.  And hopefully the tiny decorative bits will arrive in enough time for me to give it some extra detail.  It’s been a year or so since I did either a thermoplastic project or a wiring project – since Nasus, I think.  The Worbla is easy enough for me to remember the process, but I feel like I always need to brush up on my wiring skills.  Maybe I need to do more of these projects so they get to be second nature.  I’m also getting to do some resin casting again, though this time I purchased a little jewelry mold from Amazon since the shapes I need are very standard.  Here is a sample shot of her crown.

3.  Mustaches

I have hemmed and hawed over the right way to do mustaches for Mario and Luigi.  My husband doesn’t think his facial hair will cooperate to manage a natural version of Luigi’s mustache, and I doubt the physics of the Mario one.  I thought about foam.  But I’ve decided to take some fake hair extensions and try to work them into a mustache sized wig net for each brother, and then stick them to their faces with some special skin glue.  I’m fairly nervous about this, so foam is the backup!  Here are some foam examples I have found – the top is Mario, bottom is Luigi.

4.  Fireballs

Since the colors of the costumes are actually the fireball spitting versions of the plumber brothers, I thought it would be cute to try to make them fireballs to hold.  My current plan involves some strands of battery powered LED lights, empty ornament bulbs that can be filled, and cellophane.  They may turn out terrible, but seems worth a shot.

5.  Bobombs

Remember these little guys?

I’d like to make two of these before DragonCon.  The first shall be called the Disco Bobomb, and it’s base will be – surprise – a disco ball.  I have a group pose ready in my head involving this prop.  Having some trouble finding rope though.  In small quantities anyway.  Probably going to try Lowe’s or a local hardware store.  Likely foam for the wind up and clay for the feet.  The second bobomb is going to be a “photo bobomb” – for any one of us to walk up behind groups of cosplayers (or non cosplayers) and stick this dude above their heads, shoulders, near their feet, etc.  Do you think he needs a sign that says “Photo Bobomb?” Or will people get the joke?

I’m still finishing up Mario and haven’t even started Peach yet, so all these odds and ends may not get completed… but I sure hope I manage to get to them!  Can you think of anything I may have left out?

The pendants are amazing. You should use them as Christmas tree ornaments later! I think people will get the photo bobomb joke – it’s hilarious, by the way.

Ooo good idea … if my husband will part with it.

Definitely try Lowe’s for rope. They have lots of types, and some you can cut the exact length you need so you don’t get stuck with too much!

Yay! Thanks 🙂 Makes sense that you know this, now that I am thinking about it 😀 I smell a weekend trip to Lowe’s in my future.
