Phantastic Phasma

Here we are, about 3 weeks out from DragonCon.  I am happy to say my Galactic Gala Captain Phasma dress is complete.

If you remember, I was “frankensteining” this dress together from a few different patterns.  I used this one for the one shoulder bodice.

I also used this pattern as a basis for the midriff piece and the outer skirt.  I made a cute sundress (that I still love and wear) from this pattern a few years ago, and I still love the high low skirt look.

Finally, I used a pencil skirt piece of a third dress pattern (that I don’t have a photo of at the moment).

Below is the mostly finished product.

That helmet is sexy with bright red hair spilling out of it, right? 😛  Anyway, there are numerous things I have left that I can fix or change.  Captain Phasma has a one shoulder black cape.  I might make this to add on if I finish Jesse’s tuxedo in time.  I might want to bring the height of the pencil skirt up just a little bit as well.  And I have a few finishing items to do around the side zipper.

But the most glaring problem from the photo above, is the waistline.  It just looks … funny.  When I pieced together my creation, it is exactly how I imagined it, only the bottom of the wait piece just looks odd, possible because it has so many different skirts attached to it.  Who knows.  But I have already worked on a fix for that!

I wanted to use a black sparkly vinyl I bought in the dress, but it wasn’t gonna work out time wise or fabric wise.  However, I decided to use the vinyl for a belt.  And spent some time making a foam belt “buckle” with the First Order logo on it in red rhinestones.

Step 1 – use a Settlers of Catan hex piece to trace a hexagon out on the black foam.

Step 2 – use a pint glass to trace a circle into the center of the foam.

Step 3 – place rhinestones, like in the upper left corner of the below photo.

Step 4 – finish and realize you completely miscounted and put way too many rhinestones in the center.  Good thing your husband pointed out that your counting skills need work.

Step 5 – remove the offending rhinestones, place some differently, and add a few.

Step 6 – compare to the First Order Logo and give yourself a pat on the back.

Ok, so if you count, the logo has 16 black spokes in the center.  Mine only has 15.  Ask me if I give a fuck.

The buckle on the sparkly vinyl looks amazing.

Now the great debate becomes the shoes.  I bought a fabulous pair of red and black high heels that I intended for this costume.  But by nature this costume looks a bit funny because it is a helmet worn with no other armor.  And I feel like covering more of my arms and legs might help it look less weird, and also closer to the character I am basing it off of.  So I bought a pair of silver boots and silver gloves.  I will wear the gloves regardless.  But I need to choose between the boots and the red heels.

Which do you prefer?  Please comment and let me know, I cannot make up my mind on this!

As I mentioned earlier, I *might* get time to make a cape out of the same transparent black fabric on my Phasma dress, hopefully with some red bias tape around the edges.  And then I would pin it to the one shoulder of the dress.  It will be a time thing.  If I have time after I make a tuxedo, I will make a cape.

Speaking of tuxedos, I’m also in the middle of cutting out ridiculous numbers of fabric bits for Jesse’s First Order Trooper tuxedo.  So many pattern pieces. Because Vogue decided not to put the lining and fabric pieces on the same piece of tissue paper.  Instead they duplicated any pattern piece that needs lining and made me cut it separately.  WTF?!

All that being said, since time is running out, I am not certain I will be lining the tuxedo jacket yet.

It looks like this will just be a 2-person cosplay as our friends that were gonna join in have decided to cancel their DragonCon trip this year 🙁  While I am sure it would be more effective in a larger group, hopefully two First Order characters will still be fun.

That is it for today, I think.  I will leave you with this, since it is always good to practice scaring your youngsters making your child comfortable with cosplay. <3

You are so talented! I’m so jealous 😉 and I vote BOOTS! I like the pop of red from the red shoes but I agree with you — I think the boots add a little something to balance out the helmet.

Hah thanks. The helmet does need some balancing without the rest of the armor!

I kinda like the heels – but only if they’re comfortable! I’m the worst at wearing anything that isn’t flat so I always choose the most comfortable option. Can’t wait to see the finished product!!!

I’m with you, I don’t own many things with pointy heels! These are fairly low and comfy, though. I will probably find something else to wear them with cause Facebook’s overwhelming response seems to be boots!

She says emphatically, with 3 exclamation points! 🙂 Thanks for voting!

I’m still loving the heels, though it looks like boots might win! Both are great, anyway. I’m very impressed with your outfit so far!

Thanks! Yeah, boots seem like the winner. I guess I will have to build a costume around these red heels next year 😉

My vote is a Boots! Love the way everything turned out 😀

Thanks! Now just wish me luck getting it all finished in time.
